Boyzone's little boy lost
Boyzone star Stephen Gately died at his holiday home in Port d’ Andratx on the island of Majorca where he and his partner Andrew Cowles were staying.
A post-mortem showed that the 33-year-old Gately died as a result of a pulmonary oedema, or fluid in the lungs.
Boyzone members Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch said they were “completely devastated by the loss of our friend and brother, Stephen”.
Their statement read: “We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more. Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit. He lit up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world. Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen’s family. We love you and will miss you forever.”
Elton John and his partner David Furnish were stunned by this tragedy. “Stephen was the kindest, gentlest soul. We send our love and condolences to his partner Andy and to all his friends everywhere,” John said in a statement.
Gately, who came out in the British tabloid The Sun in June 1999, joined Boyzone in 1993 after answering an advert to audition for Ireland’s first boyband. Among the unsuccessful hopefuls was actor Colin Farrell. The group’s teen-friendly ballads proved a commercial hit, chalking up six number ones and selling in excess of 15 million records before they split up in 2000.
The four remaining members of Boyzone held an overnight vigil with their friend’s body in the St Laurence O’Toole church in Dublin the night before the funeral that drew thousands of mourners.
Meanwhile, Georgi Dochev, the 25-year-old Bulgarian psychology student who claims he had a three-in-a-bed romp with the couple the night before Gately died, is negotiating a deal around £150 000 for a kiss-and-tell-all exclusive with a trashy tabloid.
